Our Scripture reading today is Proverbs 22:1, "A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold."
More than likely the number one thing people would choose to have more of would be money or possessions. The question we must ask ourselves is how much stuff is enough? We learn from our text today there are other things we should aspire to have in this life. “Riches are enjoyed but till death at utmost; but a good name outlives the man, and is left behind him for a blessing.” (Trapp)
The goal of having a good name is not to be for our glory or praise. We should strive for a name that honours THE name that is above all names, Jesus Christ. Our conduct can and should show the love of our Saviour to others and the difference He has made in our lives. When someone hears our name it should be blessing to them and not a burden. Ecclesiastes 7:1, "A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth."
