Our Scripture reading today is 1 John 5:21, "Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen."
It has been said, and rightly so, that an idol is anything that takes the place of God in our lives. The idols may look a lot different from the days of the Apostle John, but they are idols nonetheless. Is there something or someone in your life that is more important to you than your relationship with God? For most, it is easy to answer with a quick, no. I would challenge you to consider how you use your free time. What do you allow to keep you from being faithful to church services? What does the stewardship of your finances look like? The answer to those questions and others will truly determine if you have an idol.
Lastly, parents...please don't help your children have idols. If our children have time for extracurricular activities like sports but no time to serve God, they are being setup to have idols at a very early age.
