Our Scripture reading today is Luke 12:13-15.
Verse 15, "And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth."
There is a definite problem in our day and in every day. People striving to have just a little bit more leads to striving to have just little bit more and on and on it goes. It seems as though we believe the statement, "He who has the most toys wins"; more than we do God's Word. Covetousness is the greedy desire to have more and more. The Lord Jesus gives a warning in this text that is still very applicable today.
The Apostle Paul gives quite the list of sins in Colossians 3:5, "Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:". Notice that covetousness is mentioned and also referred to as idolatry. In addition, a coveteous individual will never have peace. There will be a constant struggle to get more and more with no end in sight. A fulfilled life is a giving life. A fulfilled life is a serving life.
If necessary, ask God for forgiveness and for help in overcoming the sin of covetousness.
