Our Scripture reading today is Ephesians 4:30, "And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption."
We have an admonition and an assurance given to us in this one verse of Scripture. The Apostle Paul admonishes all believers to keep from grieving the Holy Spirit. This happens when we ignore the leading of Spirit and do our own thing. We grieve the Holy Spirit when we neglect to read the Word of God. He is the author of the only living Book and it grieves Him when God's people do not read it. “I think I now see the Spirit of God grieving, when you are sitting down to read a novel and there is your Bible unread… You have no time for prayer, but the Spirit sees you very active about worldly things, and having many hours to spare for relaxation and amusement. And then he is grieved because he sees that you love worldly things better than you love him.” (Spurgeon)
This same Spirit that we can grieve is our assurance of salvation policy. God is living in us and has sealed us until Christ returns or we are called home. The assurance of our salvation is so important in order for us to live the victorious Christian life. It gives us confidence in Christ and not in ourselves. The seal that the Holy Spirit has provided is unbreakable!
