Our Scripture reading today is Luke 15:29-30.

Verse 29, "And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:"

It seems quite clear that the older son is stuck on himself.  Re-read verse 29 a little slower and take note of the words in bold.  “The proud and the self-righteous always feel that they are not treated as well as they deserve.” (Morris)  Did he really keep ALL of his father's commandments?  Could this be a possible exaggeration?  What is clear is that this son did not fully appreciate what his father had faithfully provided him.

Why does God give so much to them and so little to me?  Why don't I have a really nice __________ like he does?  We can get caught up in these type of questions.  We can be as guilty as the older son in our text.  As a child of God, we have been blessed beyond measure.  Our Bible lesson last night taught us that when God cleansed us from our sin it was a miraculous moment.  The cleansing we received could have come through no other way than the shed blood of Jesus Christ.  Rejoice that your name is written in Heaven!  Rejoice that you have the Word of God!Have a wonderful day.
