Our Scripture reading today is Philippians 2:6-8.
Verse 7, "But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:"
The Lord Jesus willfully emptied Himself in order to take on humanity. He was and always will be God, however, He laid aside some of the rights of His deity. “Even as a king, by laying aside the tokens of his royalty, and putting on the habit of a merchant, when all the while he ceaseth not to be a king, or the highest in his own dominions.” (Poole) This was all done with the cross of Calvary as the finish line. Jesus Christ was born in the likeness of men to die for the sins of the world.
Our Saviour became a servant. The King of Kings and Lord of Lords became a servant. He took it upon Himself to serve the unworthy. He took it upon Himself to serve the unlovely. It is our responsibility and privilege to follow the example which has been set before us. Matthew 23:11, "But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant." On this Lord's Day, might we pray for an opportunity today to serve and not be so concerned with being served.
