Our Scripture reading today is Luke 10:40, "But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me."

While there is nothing wrong with serving, there was something more important that Martha could have been doing at this time.  Serving became a distraction to being with Jesus Christ.  I am reminded of the statement that we must be with Him before we can properly serve Him.  The most important time we have in our day is when we are "sitting next to Jesus".

“The Martha spirit says, if the work is done, is not that all? The Mary spirit asks whether Jesus is well pleased or no? All must be done in his name and by his Spirit, or nothing is done.” (Spurgeon)
