Our Scripture reading today is Luke 22:47-48.
Verse 48, "But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?"
A kiss on the cheek was commonly used as an affectionate greeting. It was culturally accepted and expected. How could Judas betray Jesus in this fashion? Judas had allowed his conscience to be so seared that he could not turn back. Actually, Judas was no longer in control of Judas. He had given himself over to the devil one too many times.
I would think that most, if not all of us, don't get up in the morning planning to betray our Saviour. We do not get up with the goal of denying Him three times like the Apostle Peter. I am not sure if Judas planned to betray Jesus from the first day he was asked to be a disciple. I would tend to believe that was not the case. Overtime something changed in the heart of Judas. We must guard our heart to prevent Judas like behaviour. We must hide the Word of God in every crevice of our heart. I don't think we plan to betray, but we should plan to prevent it!
