Our Scripture reading today is Exodus 20:2-3.
Verse 3, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me."
The children of Israel had been living in Egypt for hundreds of years. This meant they were exposed to the Egyptians pagan gods. God is reminding them Who delivered them from Egypt and Who is worthy of their worship. He did not want to be added to a list of gods they may have had. He wanted the list to be burned and new list to be started with only ONE name on it -- Lord God.
While the names may have changed from Moses' day, there is still a great temptation to worship someone or something other than the creator God. Anyone or anything that has more priority in our lives than God is an idol. It can be work, hobbies, possessions and the list could go on and on. If God's Spirit is convicting you about an idol in your life, it is time to confess the sin and forsake the idol.
