Our Scripture reading today is Proverbs 18:24, "A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother."
There are at least two important truths in this verse. First, we cannot expect to have friends if we are unwilling to be friendly. Our being friendly to others is what leads to having friends. Every day is a new opportunity to be kind. Take time to look today for someone you can show friendship.
The second truth points to One who will always be close to us even when our friends are not. The Lord Jesus is and always will be our faithful friend. He calls us friends in John 15:14-15, "Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you." The old hymn that probably comes to mind, "What a friend we have in Jesus. All our sins and griefs to bear. What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer."
We can and should praise the Lord for His eternal friendship. In addition, we should pray for God's help in being a friend today!
