Our Scripture reading today is Judges 2:10-13.
Verse 10, "And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel."
It would seem that the generation after Joshua had no personal relationship with the one true God. The miraculous power of God became a distant memory to them which ended up leading them into the worshipping the false gods of their day. It should serve as a warning to us today.
While it is true that one generation cannot have faith for the next generation, the previous generation can guide the next generation to live by Biblical principles. This will be accomplished when our talk and walk are consistent with one another. It is important that we show a genuine desire to follow God's will for our lives. We can make the application in our homes as well as the local church. The next generation of Christ followers need to be lovingly discipled each and every day. They need to see that there is nothing too small or too big to bring to God in prayer. They need to see the faithfulness of those who are older and more mature in the faith. If we as parents are not faithful to church, we can be sure that our children will follow in our footsteps. It could lead to our grandchildren having no desire at all to attend church and or follow Jesus Christ. This is only one, but a very important example.
The miracle working power of God is not bound by generations. May God help us to lead the generations following us to walk by faith!
