Our Scripture reading today is Psalm 23:1, "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want."
Psalm 23 is more than likely the most popular chapter in all of the Bible. It is used frequently in various settings and especially at funerals. Many people can recite this psalm and not even have a relationship with the Shepherd. The fact that God refers to Himself as a shepherd is quite interesting. Shepherds were not looked at as important positions. “In Israel, as in other ancient societies, a shepherd’s work was considered the lowest of all works. If a family needed a shepherd, it was always the youngest son, like David, who got this unpleasant assignment...Jehovah has chosen to be our shepherd, David says. The great God of the universe has stooped to take just such care of you and me.” (Boice)
We should follow the example of our humble Shepherd and be willing to serve in whatever capacity He leads us. Nothing is insignificant when it is done for the honour and glory of God.
