Our Scripture reading today is Luke 9:46-48.
Verse 48, "And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great."
Call it competition or call it what it really is...pride, the disciples begin a discussion on who is or who will be the greatest. A quick life lesson from the Lord Jesus is those who are greatest actually did not aspire to be the greatest. He is calling them to live a life of humility. Jesus was the humble example set before them and us. Philippians 2:8, "And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross."
He is calling us to live the very same humble life. 1 Peter 5:6, "Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:" We must not seek for praise or even appreciation. Our life goals should revolve around our humble service to our King. He is worthy of all praise. He is worthy of all honour.
