Our Scripture reading today is Ephesians 4:28-30.
Verse 29, "Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers."
A series of challenges are given to us in these verses of Scriputure. Now that we have the Holy Spirit of God dwelling in us, our conduct should be changing. In verse 29, the emphasis is on the little member of our body called the tongue. James writes in chapter 3 verse 5, "Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!" Yes, the tongue can cause quite an inferno.
The second half our verse for today reminds us that the tongue under the control of the Holy Spirt can do much good. The Apostle Paul challenges the Christians at Ephesus that their tongues can be both edifiying and ministering grace. We, too, can use our tongues to build up and encourage. We can be ministers of grace. Remember, grace is getting what we don't deserve. It might seem like someone deserves our wrath. Why not be a deliverer of grace? Colossians 4:6, "Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man."
