Our Scripture reading today is 2 Kings 18:1-6.
Verse 4, "He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brazen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan."
King Hezekiah sets an example for all of us to follow. He comes in and cleans house of all the false gods and idols that the people of God were worshipping. This included the brazen serpent that people looked to (Numbers 21; 800 years previous) and were healed. Unfortunately, even this symbol of God's mercy had become a centre point of their worship instead of the God of mercy. Hezekiah told the people it is Nehushtan...just a piece of brass! Get back to worshipping Jehovah!
The challenge for us today is to examine our hearts and see if we have set up any false gods and are worshipping them. It is possible we have allowed our service for God to take the place of God in our lives. As we do something for God, we must not allow the doing to take the place of our personal walk with Him. Our enemy will attempt to use everything in our lives to distract us from the One Who deserves all of our attention.
