Our Scripture reading today is Luke 12:35-37.
Verse 37, "Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them."
Dr. Luke is challenging those who know the Lord Jesus as Saviour to prepare for and be ready for His return. There is a promise to those who are watching for His return. These believers will be happy or blessed. What does it mean to be watching for the return of Jesus Christ? The word, watch, is translated from the greek word, gregoreo, which means to keep awake, be vigilant, be active. The word that stands out to me in describing the word watch is ACTIVE. If someone does not stay active, they will eventually be tired all the time and not very alert or vigilant.
Ask yourself what type of Biblical activities are you regularly involved in? The enemy's goal is to lull us to sleep and inactivity in order that we are not "watching" for the Lord's return. When we are inactive and not watching fewer people are hearing the Gospel, fewer people are being discipled and we ourselves are not growing in grace. When is the last time you gave any form of a witness to someone who is lost? When is the last time you shared with someone else what you are learning from God's Word? These are good indicators of someone who is watching!
