Our Scripture reading today is 1 Corinthians 4:2, "Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful."
A steward is someone who manages the affairs of someone else. A steward is given something that does not belong to him and is responsible for making sure it is cared for. Everything we have was given to us by God. It matters not what we come up with it, we have it because God gave it to us. The Apostle Paul challenged the church at Corinth with their one primary responsibility as a steward: faithfulness.
While we may have big goals for our lives and the lives of those we influence, right at the top of our list should be faithfulness. Later in this chapter (verse 17), Paul refers to Timothy as being "faithful in the Lord". As we are faithful in the Lord, we will be faithful in every area of our lives. Faithful men and women will be who they are supposed to be and do what they are supposed to do. It matters not to faithful Christians if they are recognized in this life. The faithful Christian has his or her sights set on eternity. We must daily seek the help of the Holy Spirit in order to be found faithful.
