Our Scripture reading today is Luke 16:13, "No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon."
I find the timing of this verse to be quite interesting.  Especially the very first statement, "No servant can serve two masters..."  Now, if you missed Sunday's 10am service, you are more than likely wondering why it seems interesting.  Dr. Luke also reminds us of a choice we make regarding who or what we will serve.  We have a master and it is up to us to decide which master we will have over us.  Our text today is challenging us not to let money be our master.  It is ok to have God and money, but it is impossible to serve them both.  A choice will be made.
One can determine if they are serving God or money by which one they would be willing to sacrifice for.  This will let us know today Who or What we are serving.  "When God is served, mammon is used beneficently.  When mammon is served, the claims of God are ignored." (Morgan)
