Our Scripture reading today is Philemon 10-11, "I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds: Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:"
The Apostle Paul had met the runaway slave of Philemon named Onesimus. When he met him he shared the Gospel with him and Onesimus became a Christian. This decision alone made him profitable. He was now a follower of Jesus Christ. “It is significant to note that Paul claims that in Christ the useless person has been made useful.” (Barclay)
Our life in Christ has great value. It is the LORD Jesus Who gives us this value. We, who were once an enemy of God, are now one of His children. There is so much we can do through Him for His glory and honour. At one time, we too were unprofitable, but now we are profitable. This is the life changing message we are commissioned to deliver.
