Our Scripture reading today is Matthew 7:22-23, "Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."

All the good deeds in the world will not be enough to make someone right with a thrice holy God.  Titus 3:5, "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but  according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and  renewing of the Holy Ghost;" The way to God is through His mercy.  His mercy can only be received through His sinless Son.  John 14:6, "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."  It is quite clear from God's Word that being religious and doing good deeds plays no part in gaining us entrance into Heaven.

There is a purpose for living a good life and doing good deeds.  This follows our salvation but is not part of our salvation.  Ephesians 2:10, "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." Once someone becomes a born again Christian, they are live a life that brings glory to God by faithfully serving Him.
