Our Scripture reading today is Luke 13:34-35.
Verse 34, "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!"
There is no doubt in my mind that Jesus Christ was a man of compassion. He was the God-man. He became a man without ceasing to be God. His concern and care for the people of Jerusalem can be heard in the opening words of this verse of Scripture. It did not matter how wicked they had become, Jesus compassion was on full display. The repeating of Jerusalem is spoken with depth and feeling. You might recall Jesus repeated a name previously, "Martha...Martha..." Jesus was pleading with the city to turn from their wickedness and follow Him.
We must guard against getting to a place where our hearts are hardened to the world around us. It is easy to get to a point of not having any concern whether or not someone goes to heaven or hell. This attitude is revealed by never sharing the Gospel. It is revealed when we never give out a Gospel tract. The compassion that is needed to demonstrate the love of Christ to the people of this world can only be found in the Lord Jesus. It might be a good idea to pray for your city today like Jesus prayed for Jerusalem.
