Our Scripture reading today is Luke 1:35-38.
Verse 38, "And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her."
The yielding of the mother of Jesus is something to take note of when reading this passage of Scripture. Mary referred to herself as the "handmaid of the Lord". Due to this self given title, she is no position to debate or argue with what Gabriel told her. There is a simple yet profound yielding. Another way of putting it is, "Thy will be done." She trusted God enough to go through this pregnancy that was anything but normal.
“It was inevitable that clouds would gather around her character, which would sorely perplex the good man to whom she was betrothed. But as soon as she realized that this lot was ordained for her by God, she humbly acquiesced, with these model words of patient faith.” (Meyer)
Mary sets an example for us to follow. She yielded to the Word of God for her life. She submitted to God's will. This is a most convicting principle that we also need to follow. As we do, Jesus Christ will be seen in us. Each day that we live, may be go into the day yielding to the will of God for our lives.
