Today's Scripture reading is James 4:2-4.
Verse 2, "...yet ye have not because ye ask not."
I remember a class in Bible college on the subject of Prayer.  Yes, I took an entire semester course on one word, Prayer.  There were many outside reading assignments.  There were many quizzes and tests.  There were many lectures on one word, Prayer.  I would imagine most of us reading this devotional have heard at least one sermon on the one-word subject, Prayer.  In fact, several of us have probably read a book dedicated to prayer.  We have definitely read about prayer in the Word of God.
There is no doubt that we know the importance of prayer.  There is no doubt we see in this one statement in James 4:2 what it takes to "have".  The solution to our lacking is found in this one word, Pray.  The statement we heard over and over in that class in Bible college is, "Prayer is asking".  While I know there is much more to prayer than asking, it is definitely one of the main purposes of prayer.  Why aren't we praying more?  Why aren't we asking God for everything we need?  A simple answer would be that we are too self dependent.  We believe that we can do whatever is needed.  Now, we would probably never say we don't need God's help, but our lack of praying says it for us.
Please read the lyrics to "Did You Think to Pray?" by Mary A. Kidder.

1 Ere you left your room this morning,
Did you think to pray?
In the name of Christ our Saviour,
Did you sue for loving favour,
As a shield today?

Chorus:
Oh, how praying rests the weary!
Prayer will change the night to day;
So in sorrow and in gladness,
Don’t forget to pray.

2 When you met with great temptation,
Did you think to pray?
By His dying love and merit,
Did you claim the Holy Spirit
As your guide and stay? (Chorus)

3 When your heart was filled with anger,
Did you think to pray?
Did you plead for grace, my brother,
That you might forgive another
Who had crossed your way? (Chorus)

4 When sore trials came upon you,
Did you think to pray?
When your soul was bowed in sorrow,
Balm of Gilead did you borrow
At the gates of day? (Chorus)

"Ye have not because ye ask (pray) not."
