Our Scripture reading today is 1 Timothy 6:9-10.
Verse 9, "But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition."
The real danger being warned against in these verses is the desire for or love of money. It is not wrong to gain or have wealth, but if the wealth has us, it is a big problem. We are warned that the desire for riches is much more dangerous than the riches themselves. Psalm 62:10, "Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them." We cannot allow earthly riches to distract us from laying up eternal riches in Heaven. Matthew 6:19-20, "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:" Colossians 3:2, "Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth."
Regardless of our financial situation, our hope and trust must remain in the Lord Jesus. Riches will come and go, but Jesus is the Anchor that will remain stedfast and sure. Hebrews 13:8, "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever."
