Our Scripture reading today is Luke 21:34-36.

Verse 34, "And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares."

A warning is given to those who were around the Lord Jesus, but it is also a warning for us today.  What are we allowing our hearts to meditate and focus on?  We are told not to let our hearts be "overcharged" with several things.  The word "overcharged" means to weigh down.  The first two words have to do with drinking alcoholic beverages.  The third and final one is the one that stood out to me.  We are not to be weighed down with the cares of this life.

I must admit it is easier said than done.  How quickly can the cares of this world overwhelm and cripple us.  How can we prepare for this?  Look at the first part of the verse - "Take heed to yourselves..."  We are to pay attention to what specifically weighs us down.  We are to prepare in advance by storing up the Word of God in our hearts.  The cares of this world must not distract us from preparing for the world to come.
