Our Scripture reading today is 2 Corinthians 5:21, "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."
The Bible says in Romans 3:10, "As it is written, there is none righteous no not one."  According to this and many other verses of Scripture, we had no chance of being righteous.  Each of us was born in sin.  We sin because we are sinners.  Romans 5:8 tells us, "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."  The love of God was on FULL display at Calvary.
As a youth and into my teen years, I was actively involved in collecting and trading sports cards.  There was always some competition involved as we would try to get the best deal on each trade.  Quite the amazing trade was made the day we were born again.  We gave God our sin and He gave us His righteousness!  All of this was made possible due to the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ.  Think about that for a moment.
The lyrics to, Verily, Verily (James McGranahan) speak to what we are learning today:

Oh, what a Saviour that He died for me!
From condemnation He hath made me free;
"He that believeth on the Son," said He,

"Hath everlasting life."

All my iniquities on Him were laid,
All my indebtedness by Him was paid;
All who believe on Him, the Lord hath said,

"Hath everlasting life."
Though all unworthy, yet I will not doubt;
For him that cometh He will not cast out;
"He that believeth," oh, the good news shout!
"Hath everlasting life."
Refrain:
"Verily, verily, I say unto you;
Verily, verily," message ever new!
"He that believeth on the Son," 'tis true!
"Hath everlasting life!"
