Our Scripture reading today is 1 Corinthians 13:2, "And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing."
There is a clear emphasis in this verse and chapter on the importance of having charity (love) in our lives. This is not just any kind of charity. The source of this charity must be our creator God. 1 John 4:8 tells us that God is love. If we are properly in tune with God, we will have plenty of charity to distribute throughout each and every day. Charity is the foundation on which we are to build all of the other qualities listed for us in this verse. “People of little religion are always noisy; he who has not the love of God and man filling his heart is like an empty wagon coming violently down a hill: it makes a great noise, because there is nothing in it.” (Josiah Gregory, cited in Clarke)
